Reflection

Do We Know Jesus?

A thread that runs through today’s readings is that the world did not know Jesus. They didn’t understand who He was and therefore rejected Him. It could be easy to accept worldly thinking and reject Jesus, but not if we are attentive to seeing Him for whom He is at every opportunity.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter tells us that it is in the name of Jesus Christ that he has saved and healed a cripple because there is no salvation through anyone else. If we think of our own accomplishments, can we really take all the credit for any of them? Without the grace of God or the gifts He has given us, would we have the resources to complete any task? We would do well to give credit where it is due. Praise God in all things large and small.

Ever thankful to God for His kindness and mercy, the Psalmist reminds us to place our trust not in man or prince, but in God alone who made Jesus the cornerstone after He had been rejected by men. Clearly the builders didn’t know who Jesus was. Do we?

St. John’s letter continues the theme adding that the world doesn’t know us either. He hints at a great promise in store for us though. God is not yet finished with us, when he is we will be like him and see him as he is. What gift could be greater to anticipate than this?

In the Gospel, Jesus assures us that He knows us and we know Him and that others outside the flock will join us to be one flock with Him as one shepherd. These promises provide hope and confidence that we will not reject Jesus, but will ultimately know Him and remain with Him.

Acts of the Apostles 4:8-12 (50B), Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, 28, 29, 1 John 3:1-2, John 10: 11-18

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit of light and love, you are the substantial love of the Father and the Son; hear my prayer. Bounteous bestower of most precious gifts, grant me a strong and living faith which makes me accept all revealed truths and shape my conduct in accord with them. Give me a most confident hope in all divine promises which prompts me to abandon myself unreservedly to you and your guidance. Infuse into me a love of perfect goodwill, and act according to God's least desires. Make me love not only my friends but my enemies as well, in imitation of Jesus Christ who through you offered himself on the Cross for all people. Holy Spirit, animate, inspire, and guide me, and help me to be always a true follower of you. Amen.

Reflexión

¿Conocemos a Jesús?

¿Sabemos nosotros?
